Exercise Three // Jacob Littlejohn

April 6 2020
Hi  Jacob, since Leith School of Art has shut, where are you?

I’m now based in a spare room in my mum’s house where I have managed to construct a desk to work on. I’ve also got the cobwebs off my record player and got it playing again which is lovely.

How has your process changed since staying at home?
I  wouldn’t say my process has changed much by not being able to be in the studio. I’m just not able to paint large oils, so I’m sticking to smaller water-based stuff and collage, which I did a lot of in my studio anyway.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty

comforts)?

and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?
I’ve got a couple shows on the go, Friday night dinner, Brooklyn 99 which are both hilarious and I just finished binging 3 of Park Chan Wooks films Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance & Lady Vengeance on Mubi

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading a book on a collection of interviews with Philip Guston & A History Maker - Alasdair Gray

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)

What's the next thing you are going to cook?

Ramen is always a go to. I’m going to try and make my own noodles this time

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour would you choose?

Dulux – Fresh Sage is pleasing

Which words or phrases do you most overuse  ?
I use ‘man’ in my texts a lot and have to remove quite a lot from emails

Do you have any superstitions?
I have that one about seeing a lonely magpie. Just because my grandma used to always tell me to say good morning to them if they were on their own – bad luck or something?

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a

joke, your pet)
The Ricky Gervais Show and my dog Louie keep me smiling

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine practice with? Why?

Diebenkorn, just because he is very relative to my work now. He seemed like a really nice guy and wouldn’t mind some advice on where to do my masters and to discuss his love for Matisse

Exercise 2

Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:
Draw with something you found on your one walk of the day

We are probably going to get through a lot of these homework sheets - so

write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?
What is the best film you’ve ever seen versus the worst?

We are putting together a mixtape -  what are your go to songs ?

Jumbo – Underworld for dancing

Paul Simon – Diamonds on The Soles of Her Shoes in the studio

Anything Pink Floyd for chilling out

For  Exercise Three, we ask our artists to  pick one of the following subjects as a starting point to make some work using an A5 piece of paper/cloth/whatever you like to the size  with no restriction on media. These will be published on our website and available for £110 each.

  1. Still life: pick 3 items from your surrounding and recreate them

  2. Draw the last text you received/Page 15 from a book you are currently reading 7th sentence down

  3. Draw the last exhibition you saw/in style of the last exhibition you saw
