Exercise Three // Elizabeth Stewart

April 14 2020

Hi Elizabeth, to kick off exercise one,  where are you?
I’m sitting in front of the computer and just remembered that good old Photo Booth app. 3...2...1...

How has your process changed since staying at home?
It hasn’t really. Currently I’m in daydream mode. Looking forward to immersion mode.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty
comforts)?
The one I can remember, while listening to Radio 6, is Pharrell's Frontin

and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?
Better Things Love.

What are you reading right now?
As always, too many on the go...'Figuring', Maria Popova (I love her weekly newsletter, Brain Pickings. The prelude blew me away. Read it here ), 'Ninth Street Women' by Mary Gabriel, Anne Lamott's 'Stitches' and 'Great Women Artists’. Mainly yellow books, I guess.

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)
Soup...broccoli and parsnip with potato, onion, wild garlic, sprinkle of dulse, basil, s/p served with goat’s yogurt.

What's the next thing you are going to cook?
Wild salmon (Damn, forgot to get it out of the freezer!), roasted cauliflower, something green.

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour
would you choose?
Hard question....oh geez... variations of white? Hmmm...But that puts me in mind of John and Yoko's ‘Imagine’ video and that all white room always annoyed me. I need to think about this one longer. Sorry. No, it has to be a shade of white. One that’s not named after a flower.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse  ?
Hmmmm..... maybe it’s ‘Hmmmm’?

Do you have any superstitions?
I’m not sure if it's a superstition or a hangover from my childhood, but I’ve always left one bite of food on my plate. If someone suggested I take the last bite, I wouldn’t and still won’t.

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a
joke, your pet)
The laughter of my baby grandson, Ivor. Pure joy.

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine
practice with? Why?
Pauline Boty, because I think we’d get along, make some good work together, and she deserves more time on earth (even if she had to be quarantined with me.)

Exercise 2
Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:
Draw a self portrait with you eyes closed. Then draw a portrait of your parents with your eyes open. Emotional stuff.

We are probably going to get through a lot of these homework sheets - so
write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?
Going for the big one: What gives your life meaning?

We are putting together a mixtape -
what’s your go to song for dancing ?

Lose yourself to Dance, Daft Punk

being in the studio ? Everything on BBC Radio 6, especially Mary Anne
Hobbs show . Well, ok, Hannah Peel, Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia,
especially Sunrise Through The Dusty Nebula

chilling out ? Go Folks, Go Bonnie Prince Billy

falling in love ? Appalachian Waltz by Mark O'Connor and played by Yo Yo
Ma

For  Exercise Three, we ask our artists to  pick one of the following subjects as a starting point to make some work using an A5 piece of paper/cloth/whatever you like to the size  with no restriction on media. These will be published on our website and available for £110 each.

  1. Still life: pick 3 items from your surrounding and recreate them

  2. Draw the last text you received/Page 15 from a book you are currently reading 7th sentence down

  3. Draw the last exhibition you saw/in style of the last exhibition you saw

I’ve responded to question 2:  From Figuring by Maria Popova. The text makes a good title... the sun at varying speeds along ellipses  The pieces are mixed media on paper.

I really hope you are all keeping well. We can do this thing!
