Exercise Three // Thomas Adam

April 20 2020
Hi  Tom,  to kick off exercise one,  where are you?
Leith, Edinburgh.

How has your process changed since staying at home?

I am using this strange and tragic time to strip back my artistic practice, whilst in self isolation I am without my ususal   materials and the space that I would normally require to create my work. It will be an interesting exercise for me to focus on drawing and working smaller, as well as planning for new works to create once things return to some new kind of normal.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty

comforts)?
and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?
Terrace House (which is officially the best show on Netflix)

What are you reading right now?
Authority by Jeff VanderMeer which is the second book  of the Southern Reach trilogy. It's a really intresting science fiction which Alex Garland's film Annihilation was based on. It's been sitting  on my bedside table unopened for 7 months and 14 days, which incidentally is exactly the same age as my baby boy Ivor.

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)

I've really been getting into my fusion cooking whilst in lock down. For example, I had leftover aubergine parmigiana and tattie scones for lunch. It was a so so combo, I thought i would be better.

What's the next thing you are going to cook?

Similarly to seemingly everyone else at the moment, I plan on trying my hand at baking, particularly making bread. I hope to become a master during this time, as it looks like one of the most satisfying thing ever, pulling a crusty loaf out of the oven.

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour

would you choose?
 Zanzibar pink.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse  ?
Ziggy piggy (see 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' Napoleon ice cream eating scene) had been used a lot recently when feeding baby Ivor, which he seems to love.

Do you have any superstitions?

Nah, I don't do superstitions, don't get me started on conspiracy theories though.

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a

joke, your pet)
It's really old but 'phonejacker' gets me every time.

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine practice with? Why?

My performance artist friend Calvin Laing.

Exercise 2

Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:

Draw a self portrait from the future.

We are probably going to get through a lot of these homework sheets - so

write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?
 -

We are putting together a mixtape -  what’s your go to song for dancing ?

being in the studio ?
chilling out ?
falling in love ?

Momus - Sadness of Things

For  Exercise Three, we ask our artists to  pick one of the following subjects as a starting point to make some work using an A5 piece of paper/cloth/whatever you like to the size  with no restriction on media. These will be published on our website and available for £110 each.

  1. Still life: pick 3 items from your surrounding and recreate them

  2. Draw the last text you received/Page 15 from a book you are currently reading 7th sentence down
