Exercise Three // Freya Douglas-Morris

April 25 2020
Hi  Freya,   to kick off exercise one,  where are you?
I am in my home studio, which is a room in our house.

How has your process changed since staying at home?

Well actually, I've been working from home for the last 3 years. I left my previous studio space in Hackney Wick a few months after my daughter was born as it made more sense to work from home while I had my 2 children. When I first moved my studio home I made big shifts in my process, rethinking the materials I use to make them as non toxic as possible, which lead me to use water based paint layers to start the oil paintings. The scale of my work shifted slightly  also and the way I made the paintings changed; I worked on fewer paintings at a time, due to time and space limitations. However I am moving into a new space outside my home when the lockdown is over, which I am looking forward to.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty

and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?
The last film I watched was Marriage Story by Noah Baumbach. It's one of those happy sad films.

What are you reading right now?
I am reading the stories of Beatrix Potter with my daughter.

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)

I cook a lot, I really enjoy it and find it relaxing. Yesterday our neighbour gave us a big bag of wild garlic leaves, so I made us a pesto which we had with pasta.

What's the next thing you are going to cook?

I am going to make a big chickpea curry. It’s the perfect lockdown food to cook as it’s made predominantly from things that come in a tin! I make it really mild as it’s for my whole family. So you could add more spice if you want to. I’ll give you a brief recipe...

In a large pan cook one big chopped onion with 2 crushed garlic cloves till soft

Add one teaspoon of garam masala and 2 teaspoons of tumeric

Stir in 2 x 400g tin of tinned tomatoes

Simmer for 10 minutes

Add 1 x 400g tin of coconut milk

Bring to the boil and then simmer for another 10 minutes

Add 2 x 400 g tin of chickpeas

Warm through, eat with rice. It’s really delicious and easy.

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour

would you choose?
The warm colour of setting plaster.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse  ?
'...I'll  just have a quick coffee first...'
Do you have any superstitions?

I am not really superstitious but I believe in Karma

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a

joke, your pet)

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine practice with? Why?

There are a lot of artists I would like to spend time with, but maybe I’d choose Hockney for this quarantine. I think he’d be good company and I’d enjoy making drawings in the same room as him.

Exercise 2

Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:

Sit in front of a mirror, draw your reflection using  the wrong hand.

We are probably going to get through a lot of these homework sheets - so

write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?

What is your best time of day or night to work and why. What makes that time more productive for you and have you made shifts in your life to facilitate it?

We are putting together a mixtape -  what’s your go to song for dancing ?

being in the studio ? chilling out ? falling in love ?

When I got married we walked out of the registry office to ‘Stupidity’ by Solomon Burke so that holds a special place in my heart and makes me want to dance.I love the trumpets.

For  Exercise Three, we ask our artists to  pick one of the following subjects as a starting point to make some work using an A5 piece of paper/cloth/whatever you like to the size  with no restriction on media. These will be published on our website and available for £110 each.

  1. Still life: pick 3 items from your surrounding and recreate them

  2. Draw the last text you received/Page 15 from a book you are currently reading 7th sentence down

  3. Draw the last exhibition you saw/in style of the last exhibition you saw
