Exercise Three // Zuzana Ullmannová

May 4 2020
Hi  Zuzana,   to kick off exercise one,  where are you and  how has your process changed since staying at home?

See attached ! I miss my studio. I think my way of working itself hasn’t changed much - drawing’s going about the same - but all the things hovering at the edge of my practice (walking, reading, talking) are different. That took some adjusting. I’m excited to be working with different materials than usually.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty

comforts)?

 This Alyona Alyona song.

and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?
Rashomon, first Kurosawa film I've seen.

What are you reading right now?
The Mirror & the Light by Hilary Mantel. Can’t really focus on another book at the same time, I’m sure I’d forget so many details of intrigue.

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)

Chickpea pasta with tomatoes, garlic and broccoli.

What's the next thing you are going to cook?

Bread! Though having only moderate success with the starter...

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour

would you choose?
Brown - dark wood, warm mushroomy colours

Which words or phrases do you most overuse  ?
'That's awful' and other sorts of exclamation  of dismay etc.

Do you have any superstitions?

I can’t recall any now, but I’m sure there’s some pattern to how I worry.

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a

joke, your pet)

A lot of birdwatching is happening around here, so I enjoy a bird meme.

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine practice with? Why?

Maybe Daniel Lie. I have access to a garden here and planting things, slowly watching them grow, made me think of Lie’s exhibition I saw last summer. His work is very patient, grounded and ritualistic. Those are qualities that I’d love to see in my work too.

Exercise 2

Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:

Draw something that you remember being scared of as a child.

write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?

What are your favourite tools to work with/ what do you use most often?

We are putting together a mixtape -  what’s your go to song for dancing ?

some classic for dancing - Lay All Your Love On Me or really anything else by ABBA

being in the studio ?

In the studio I like to listen to podcasts or full albums, so I can focus for longer. The last two albums by clipping are best heard like that, there are lots of weird interludes. Love Story 7 from their latest.

chilling out ?
Tristan a Izolda by Katarzia for (melancholy) chilling out
falling in love ?

Old Souls from Brian de Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise for falling in love.

For  Exercise Three, we ask our artists to  pick one of the following subjects as a starting point to make some work using an A5 piece of paper/cloth/whatever you like to the size  with no restriction on media. These will be published on our website and available for £110 each.

  1. Still life: pick 3 items from your surrounding and recreate them

  2. Draw the last text you received/Page 15 from a book you are currently reading 7th sentence down
