Exercise Three // Jen Wink Hays

May 19 2020
Hi  Jen,   to kick off exercise one,  where are you?

Philadelphia, in my studio... which is attached to my home.

How has your process changed since staying at home?

My ability to focus is more variable these days. I'm wanting to do immersive messy sculpture stuff right now more than careful brushwork. But otherwise my process is the same. Oh, I've learned to work while my kids are in the building, something I totally couldn't do before the lockdown.

Whats last or current song you listened to (no cheating, we all have naughty

comforts)?

Paradise City by GNR was playing in my husband's studio when I walked through it a few minutes ago. I stopped and played air guitar for a minute.

and the last or current show/film/video you watched ?

"Afterlife" with Ricky Gervais

What are you reading right now?

"What it Means To Write about Art" by Jarrett Earnest

What’s the last thing you cooked? (recipes welcome!)

Smoky blackbean soup on rice and loaded up with toppings like sour cream, shredded red cabbage, red onion, cilantro, lettuce, black olives.

What's the next thing you are going to cook?

Chicken pot pie has been requested for tonight.

If everything in your house was going to be the same colour what colour

would you choose?

White or something earthy

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

"can you unload the dishwasher?"

Do you have any superstitions?

Not really, but I have been known to knock on wood.

What makes you laugh (feel free to share any videos, memes, record a

joke, your pet)

My husband, Tyler, comes from a very funny family so it is really built-in. He's not a lampshade-head, life of the party type but he can destroy with a voice or an impression, an observation or a completely, intentionally inappropriate comment. For example, I just read aloud the drawing prompt options for this questionnaire ending with "draw the last text you received." It had no sooner left my mouth than I received the text:"horse fellating a monkey."

Which artist-living or dead would you like to share your quarantine practice with? Why?

Definitely Cezanne! (just kidding, I have kids.) Were any of the great abstract expressionists non-smokers? It would be cool to watch Lee Krasner or Joan Mitchell at work. Or Eva Hesse.

Exercise 2

Write a drawing prompt you would like someone else to receive:
Draw something mundane and utilitarian that you see or use everyday in your home (the more boring the bject the better). Really look at the object and draw what you see, not your idea of how it looks. Be observational as possible. Be a slave to what you see.

We are probably going to get through a lot of these homework sheets - so

write a question for other people that you want to know the answer to ?
Is there an artistic modality that you are surprisingly bad at?

We are putting together a mixtape -  what’s your go to song for dancing ?

 "Colors" by Beck

being in the studio ?

Lately, a Pandora station based on the song "Fight Test" by the Flaming Lips.

chilling out ?

Glenn Miller, The Shins, John Prine

falling in love ?

"First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes was our first dance song at our wedding.
