Elizabeth Armstrong

Elizabeth works in a variety of media on a large and unrestricted scale, allowing her greater freedom to convey and capture her inner spirit and movement of the equine subject.

Elizabeth Armstrong graduated from Goldsmiths Art College in the 1970's with a degree in Painting, Textiles and Embroidery, and during the ten years she lived in Spain, Elizabeth worked as a portrait artist on the Costa Brava, aquiring a fine reputation for pastel and pencil sketches, and a fondness for Mediterranean colours.  Her style is deliberately abstract and visually arresting. Using pure pigments mixed with various varnishes, she brings the paint alive with transluscent glazes.

Her training in embroidery and textiles has led her to incorporate these techniques into her work, often weaving cloth, embroidery and horse hair into the canvas.  Elizabeth's passion and pride for these magnificent creatures is clearly present in her vibrant, energetic paintings, and hopes that these will make a lasting impression on the world of art and in the hearts of horse lovers everywhere.

This subject matter and expressive style has resulted in exhibitions at Lauderdale House in Highgate, the Dubai World Cup, the Ascot Art Festival, Burlington Contemporary Art, Cheltenham, at Guards, Cowdrey Park, Tidworth and Cirencester Polo Clubs.

Her love of horses inspired her to become involved with London based Brooke charity in 2005; a charity that educates people in the worlds' poorest communities about the welfare and management of working animals. In 2007 she was awarded the IBA prize for the best horse/rider picture in conjunction with Society of Equestrian Artists.

Elizabeth has silent auctioned work at the National Dressage Championships in 2005 to 2007, Cartier Polo Windsor in 2006 and Hickstead in 2007, and has provided art to support the Injured Riders Fund, Air Ambulance and Help for Heroes' at Cirencester Park Polo Club.

From June 10th - 30th 2013, Arusha Art Gallery enjoyed an exclusive exhibition of Elizabeth Armstrong's work in our Edinburgh Gallery.
