Shelagh Atkinson

Shelagh Atkinson was born in Scotland in 1959 and it was after her early studies in Social Psychology and Communication that she began exhibiting her vivid paintings and prints.

Shelagh's artistic practice has expanded from painting, printmaking and photography to sound, text and pamphlets; seamlessly bridging varied art forms which offer what she refers to as "the music of the visual."

Her work once quoted as having 'an abundant, meandering artistic production', Shelagh pays no attention to theory, regarding her work as the result of inspirations from anything the creative mind can conjoure, her work speaking from the heart, "I do what I do with my voracious interest in so many subjects."

She has gone on to exhibit extensively in Britain and abroad, including the Kanagawa Print Triennial, Japan, Women in Contemporary Printmaking, Sofia, Bulgaria, Thoroughly Modern Women at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and a solo exhibition at the Scottish Russia Institute Inclusion, in Who's Who In Art 35th edition Morven press.

She has work in collections including Royal Bank Head Office, London, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and The Scottish National Museum.  Shelagh was recently awarded the Flora Wood Award Visual Arts Scotland prize at the Annual Open Exhibition 2013.

As well as exhibiting her prints and paintings at numerous venues, Shelagh's artist zines are also held in collections internationally, including The Women's Library London, Barnard College Library, NewYork, Imprint; the Print Council of Australia, North Melbourne and the Scottish Poetry Library Edinburgh.
